PC Optimum vs Scene+

Two of Canada's biggest grocery loyalty programs, two very different math models. Here's how PC Optimum and Scene+ stack up for the weekly shop — and which one actually saves your household more.

The short answer

Scene+ has a richer base point value (1¢ per point vs PC Optimum's 0.1¢) and is the simpler program if you shop at Sobeys-banner stores. PC Optimum wins when you stack personalized offers, 20× points days, and the PC Financial Mastercard at Loblaws-family stores — its targeted offers can dwarf Scene+'s on any given week. The right answer depends on which chains are within your delivery zone, not on a universal "better program."

Net value, not point totals

Comparing 10,000 PC Optimum points ($10) to 1,000 Scene+ points ($10) makes the programs look identical. They're not — the gap is in bonus events. A single "Spend $250, get 25,000 pts" PC Optimum offer is worth $25 on top of base earn. Scene+ rarely runs flat spend-threshold bonuses but compensates with steady weekly multipliers at Sobeys-banner stores via the Scotiabank card.

Basketr's planner reads both programs' active offers each week and folds them into a single net-cost number per store, so you don't have to translate points into dollars yourself.

When to pick which

  • Pick PC Optimum if a Loblaws-family store (Loblaws, Zehrs, No Frills, RCSS) is your primary grocery, you'll use Shoppers Drug Mart for stacking, and you'll open the app weekly to load offers.
  • Pick Scene+ if you shop at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, or FreshCo, want a simpler program, or already redeem points for Cineplex / dining.
  • Run both if you live somewhere both chains are competitive — Basketr will route each item to whichever store gives the best net price after loyalty.
